 MONOCHROMATIC PAINTING

Once a student has achieved a certain level of mastery with drawing, he can begin to experiment with paint. An individual may be a competent draftsman but finds him or herself clumsy when attempting a synonymous action with paint and brushes on canvas. It takes time to build up new skills.

Simple monochromatic exercises are designed to help the student learn how to turn form in paint and create the illusion of the third dimension. This study clearly reveals any problems in rendering and helps isolate the areas the student needs to develop further. Understanding the anatomy of chiaroscuro (style of pictorial art employing only light and shade) well enough to transform a 2 dimensional subject to look like three dimensional forms a benchmark of knowledge necessary for solving more complex problems. From here the student can turn his or her attention to master copy, cast, still-life and figure paintings.

LIMITED PALLET – WARM AND COOL STUDIES

The student has been spending a lot of time working with black and white and will progress to working with color. The transition is made slow via using only a few colors on their palette. The intermediate stage of working in a simple palette with only a few colors, representing the shift of temperature from warm to cool, incrementally introduces decisive concepts in color, pointing the way to full color painting.
